Mental exercise tires a dog out as much as physical exercise. Puzzle feeders, sniffing games and chew toys reduce anxiety, barking and destructive chewing โ especially for clever working breeds like Kelpies and Border Collies left home alone.
Pick toys sized so your dog can't swallow them, and match toughness to chew style. The thumbnail test: if you can't dent it with a thumbnail, it may be too hard for teeth. Supervise new toys and retire anything that's breaking apart.
Safety comes first: toys must be size-appropriate (nothing swallowable), made from materials that pass the thumbnail hardness check, and built to fail safely rather than into sharp pieces. Then we judge enrichment value against veterinary behaviour guidance โ a toy has to genuinely engage the brain, not just look cute on the shelf. Final picks are reviewed by Dr Sarah Nguyen, BVSc.

Rotate a puzzle feeder, a frozen stuffed KONG, and a safe chew. Ten minutes of sniffing or licking calms the canine brain more than an hour of fetch.
In moderation, yes โ but always end a laser session by landing the dot on a physical toy your cat can 'catch', so the hunt feels complete.
Look for solid rubber or nylon toys rated for power chewers, sized larger than your dog's mouth. Avoid cooked bones, antlers and toys with detachable squeakers.
Inspect weekly and replace any toy with cracks, exposed stuffing or loose parts. Puzzle feeders last years; soft plush toys may last weeks with heavy chewers.
