Short coats: brush weekly. Long or double coats: 2โ3 times a week, daily during shedding season. Nails every 3โ4 weeks โ if you hear clicking on hard floors, they're overdue. Bathe dogs every 4โ6 weeks with a pet-safe shampoo (never human shampoo โ the pH is wrong for pet skin).
Pair every session with treats and keep early sessions under five minutes. Handle paws and ears regularly from puppyhood so vet visits and nail trims stay easy for life.
We assess grooming products for pH-balanced, genuinely pet-safe formulations (never re-labelled human products), ingredient transparency, and ease of use for nervous pets. Brushes and tools are checked for comfort, durability and coat suitability, and our picks align with RSPCA and veterinary grooming guidance. Final picks are reviewed by Dr Sarah Nguyen, BVSc.

No โ human shampoo is too acidic for canine skin and strips protective oils, causing dryness and itching. Always use a pH-balanced pet shampoo.
Trim small amounts at a 45-degree angle, avoiding the pink 'quick' inside the nail. Keep styptic powder handy, and reward generously after each paw.
Brush double-coated breeds 2โ3 times a week with a de-shedding tool, feed an omega-rich diet, and bathe every 4โ6 weeks to loosen dead undercoat.
Rarely โ healthy cats self-groom. A bath is only needed for sticky or toxic messes, or for hairless breeds. Regular brushing matters more, especially for long-haired cats.
