Yes, some small cats and dogs can fly in the cabin in Australia, but only under a specific airline serviceānot as ordinary carry-on luggage. As verified on 1 November 2026, Virgin Australiaās AdelaideāMelbourne Pets in Cabin service was bookable for travel until 31 January 2027. Other routes in its June release had a 30 September 2026 booking horizon and must not be assumed available. Confirm the exact flight, pet space and current terms before buying a human fare.
Travel-rule check: 1 November 2026. Airline routes, operating dates, fees, forms and eligibility can change. This guide separates verified facts from items you must confirm. The conditions in force when you purchase govern your booking. It is general information, not veterinary advice.
Which airlines allow pets in cabin in Australia?
For an ordinary companion animal, Virgin Australia offers a Pets in Cabin product on selected, operated domestic services. Availability is limited by route, flight, aircraft, pet capacity and passenger eligibility. It is not a blanket entitlement to take a pet aboard any Virgin flight.
Qantas uses a different pathway for ordinary pets. Its official pet-travel page says animals travel in a special area of a passenger aircraftās hold, with domestic bookings handled through Qantas Freight. Qantas separately states that service dogs can travel in the passenger cabin subject to its application requirements.
| Airline and animal category | Verified cabin or hold pathway | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Virgin Australia: eligible small dog or cat | Pets in Cabin on selected domestic flights operated by Virgin Australia | Check the exact route and flight, then arrange the pet service through the Guest Contact Centre |
| Qantas: ordinary pet | Special hold area through Qantas Freight, not the ordinary passenger cabin | Ask Qantas Freight for a route-specific quote and requirements |
| Qantas: eligible service dog | Separate passenger-cabin pathway | Follow Qantasās service-dog application process; do not use companion-pet assumptions |
| Approved assistance animal on another eligible Virgin domestic service | Separate assistance-animal arrangements, not the Pets in Cabin trial | Use the airlineās assistance-animal process and verify eligibility |
An assistance or service animal is not interchangeable with a companion pet, an emotional-support label or an ordinary pet booking. Use the airlineās official assistance-animal criteria. International and partner-operated flights can follow different rules.
Current Virgin Australia Pets in Cabin routes: what is verified?
Virgin Australiaās 23 June 2026 announcement listed eight directional routes across Adelaide, Melbourne, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast. However, the same announcement applied different booking horizons:
| Route shown in the June 2026 release | Booking horizon stated then | Safe interpretation on 1 November 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Adelaide ā Melbourne | Travel until 31 January 2027 | Listed as bookable in the release; still confirm the specific flight and pet space |
| Melbourne ā Adelaide | Travel until 31 January 2027 | Listed as bookable in the release; still confirm the specific flight and pet space |
| Adelaide ā Gold Coast | Other services bookable for travel until 30 September 2026 | That date has passed; verify a new official announcement before treating the route as available |
| Melbourne ā Gold Coast | Other services bookable for travel until 30 September 2026 | That date has passed; do not rely on the old route table alone |
| Melbourne ā Sunshine Coast | Other services bookable for travel until 30 September 2026 | That date has passed; confirm current availability directly |
This distinction matters: a route appearing in an announcement does not prove that pet capacity is available on your date. A passenger seat being sold does not prove that the pet product is sold either. The service remains subject to airport approvals and Virginās terms.
Use our Australian pet-flight verification tracker to record the source, date checked and answer for every flight. Never paste an old route list into a new booking plan without rechecking it.
Can you take dogs on domestic flights in Australia?
Yes, but āon a flightā can mean either in the cabin under an eligible pet product or in an approved hold-based animal-transport arrangement. The right pathway depends on the airline, route, animal, container and bookingānot on an ownerās preference alone.
For Virginās Pets in Cabin service, the verified terms include:
- small domesticated dogs or cats only;
- at least eight weeks old and not weaned within five days of travel;
- one pet per carrier and one carrier per guest;
- maximum 8 kg combined weight of pet and carrier;
- maximum carrier dimensions 44 cm long Ć 26 cm wide Ć 28 cm high;
- a soft-sided, well-constructed, ventilated carrier with a leakproof base and absorbent bedding;
- enough room for the pet to stand, turn around and lie naturally without protruding from the sides; and
- carrier placement beneath the seat in front of the allocated window seat for the flight.
Measure the actual carrier and weigh the pet inside it. A carrier advertised as āairline approvedā is not automatically accepted on every aircraft or airline. Check current breed restrictions and the full carrier specification as well as its size.
How to book a pet in the cabin
1. Check the exact service before committing to fares
Find an officially listed eligible route and ask whether Pets in Cabin is operating on your preferred date and flight. Confirm both directions for a return journey. Avoid buying a separate seat for a dog: Virginās product keeps the animal secured in its carrier, not sitting on a passenger seat.
2. Confirm passenger and pet eligibility
Virginās terms restrict the product in specified circumstances, including certain travellers flying alone with an infant, unaccompanied minors and travellers with an assistance animal. Guests with specific service requirements may need medical-assessment approval. Ask about your own circumstances rather than assuming eligibility.
3. Arrange the pet service at least 72 hours before departure
Virginās terms say to add a pet through the Guest Contact Centre at least 72 hours before departure. Earlier is safer because pet numbers are limited. Record the booking reference, quoted fee and conditions supplied at purchase.
The June 2026 release mentioned introductory cash and points prices, but its own notes allow fees to change. Those historical figures are not quoted as current prices here. Use the price published or quoted when you book, per pet, per one-way sector, in addition to your fare.
4. Prepare documents and equipment
Check vaccination status, applicable veterinary certificates, breed-specific forms, absorbent mats, restraint equipment and food or water for delays. Virginās terms say no food or water is to be placed inside the carrier; follow current instructions for what you may carry and how your petās needs will be managed.
5. Allow time for airport procedures
Under the verified terms, pet check-in is no later than 75 minutes before scheduled departure. Follow the airlineās latest guidance if it specifies an earlier arrival. Expect carrier checks, a Pet Acceptance declaration, security screening and sealing procedures. At the airport, the pet generally remains contained except during security screening or use of an animal-relief area.
Does my pet need a health certificate to fly domestically?
Not every healthy pet on every domestic trip needs a separate certificate under the cited Virgin terms. A veterinary certificate dated no more than two weeks before departure is required in specified circumstances, including when the pet:
- is between 8 and 12 weeks old;
- is over 12 years old;
- is sick or has a chronic medical condition;
- has had surgery in the last two weeks;
- is pregnant; or
- is sedated, although Virgin states that sedation is not recommended.
All listed brachycephalic pets require the specified veterinary Brachycephalic Fit to Fly assessment form, also issued no more than two weeks before departure. Pets must be fit and healthy, current with vaccinations and free of infectious disease. A certificate does not override the pilotās final safety decision or the airlineās ability to refuse carriage.
Read the cat health certificate cost guide for the difference between a domestic fit-to-fly assessment and an international export health certificate. Do not sedate a pet unless a veterinarian who knows the animal and travel plan specifically advises it; airline acceptance rules still apply.
Pets in cabin versus hold travel
Neither pathway is automatically right for every animal. Compare actual requirements with your vet and the carrier.
| Consideration | Eligible cabin service | Hold-based pet transport |
|---|---|---|
| Where the animal travels | Secured in a compliant carrier beneath the designated seat | Approved special hold area under the transport providerās process |
| Size and species | Virgin cabin product is restricted to small dogs and cats within weight/carrier limits | Provider-specific species, crate, breed and route requirements |
| Booking | Limited pet capacity; separate pet service in addition to passenger fare | Freight or animal-transport booking process |
| Owner contact | Owner remains responsible but cannot open the sealed carrier whenever they wish | Animal is not with the passenger in the cabin |
| Health and stress | Individual health, temperament and veterinary advice matter | Individual health, crate familiarity, weather and veterinary advice matter |
| Disruption | Reaccommodation may not be possible on another cabin-eligible flight | Subject to the freight providerās disruption arrangements |
Ask a registered veterinarian about your animalās health and travel suitability. Do not interpret a shorter journey or cabin access as proof that flying is low-stress. Prepare the carrier gradually, maintain familiar routines where practical and avoid introducing new supplements or medications without veterinary guidance.
What can change or go wrong?
Pet acceptance is not absolute. Virginās terms allow refusal for issues including inadequate documents, a non-compliant carrier, poor health, aggression, persistent noise or toileting, odour, security-screening problems or escape. The pilot in command makes the final carriage decision.
Check refund and change conditions before paying. The terms distinguish specified airline-controlled disruptions from owner cancellation, illness or refusal under the conditions. A pet place on an alternative flight is not guaranteed after disruption. Have a practical fallback for accommodation and transport, plus an emergency contact.
Also check:
- state, territory, council and Aboriginal land council movement rules;
- airport-specific animal-relief and containment requirements;
- prohibited carrier devices, including battery-operated or tracking devices under Virginās terms;
- restrictions on medical items through screening points; and
- whether your accommodation genuinely accepts the species, size and number of pets.

Frequently asked questions
What does āpet in cabinā mean?
It means an eligible animal travels inside an approved carrier in the passenger cabin under a specific airline product. It does not mean the pet can sit loose on a seat or be treated as ordinary hand luggage.
Can I buy a seat for my dog in Australia?
Do not assume so. Under Virginās Pets in Cabin terms, the pet remains in its compliant carrier beneath the seat in front of the allocated passenger window seat. Ask the airline about its actual product rather than purchasing an unapproved arrangement.
Does Qantas allow pets in the cabin?
Qantasās official page directs ordinary pets to travel in a special hold area through Qantas Freight. Its separate service-dog pathway allows eligible service dogs in the passenger cabin. Do not confuse the two categories.
Can cats fly in the cabin in Australia?
Yes, on eligible Virgin Australia Pets in Cabin services if the cat, carrier, passenger and flight meet the current conditions. Domestic cabin access is not universal across routes or airlines.
How much does it cost to fly a dog interstate in Australia?
There is no single total. Costs may include your fare, the pet service or freight charge, carrier or crate, veterinary assessment, documents, ground transport and disruption contingencies. Obtain a written route-specific quote; old promotional prices may no longer apply.
Are pets allowed on international flights from Australia in the cabin?
International arrangements vary by operating airline, destination, transit point and import rules. Selected domestic cabin eligibility does not establish international eligibility. Verify the whole itinerary and the export process before booking.
