Adopt, don't shop for a pet
National Pet Adoption Day is a reminder that millions of animals in shelters across Australia are waiting for their forever home. Here's everything you need to know about adoption.

Each year, thousands of animals enter shelters across Australia. While the number of pets being euthanised has decreased significantly over the past decade, shelters remain full of animals who are healthy, friendly and desperately in need of a home.
**Why adopt?** When you adopt from a shelter or rescue organisation, you are saving a life. Adopted animals are typically desexed, vaccinated, microchipped and health-checked before you take them home — meaning the upfront cost is often less than buying from a breeder.
**Where to adopt in Australia** - RSPCA Australia — rspca.org.au - Animals Australia — animalsaustralia.org - Local council pounds and rescue networks - Breed-specific rescues (often found via Facebook or PetRescue.com.au)
**What to expect** The adoption process usually involves an application, a meet-and-greet and a home check. Shelters want to ensure animals go to suitable homes — this is not a barrier, it's a safeguard for everyone.
**Consider older animals** Kittens and puppies are adorable but they require enormous time and energy. Adult animals in shelters are often already trained and may suit a busy household perfectly.
