Siberian Forest Cat breed — Russia's national cat, triple-layered coat

Siberian Forest Cat

Also known as: Siberian Cat

The Siberian is a magnificent, semi-long-haired cat with a triple-layered, weather-resistant coat and an athletic, powerful build. They are affectionate and dog-like in personality — following their owners around, greeting guests and playing fetch. Interestingly, Siberians produce lower levels of the Fel d 1 protein, making them a better option for mild allergy sufferers than most breeds.

History

The Siberian Forest Cat is the national cat of Russia, mentioned in fairy tales and children's books for centuries. They evolved naturally in the harsh Siberian climate, developing their dense triple coat as protection. The breed arrived in the United States in 1990 and has grown rapidly in popularity since then.
