Selkirk Rex
The Selkirk Rex is the "teddy bear" of the cat world — a large, round, soft-coated cat with a curly, plush coat that makes them irresistible to touch. Unlike the Cornish and Devon Rex (which are slender breeds), the Selkirk is cobby and solid. They are patient, tolerant and affectionate, making them excellent family cats.
About
The Selkirk Rex is the "teddy bear" of the cat world — a large, round, soft-coated cat with a curly, plush coat that makes them irresistible to touch. Unlike the Cornish and Devon Rex (which are slender breeds), the Selkirk is cobby and solid. They are patient, tolerant and affectionate, making them excellent family cats.
History
The Selkirk Rex originated in Montana, USA in 1987 when an unusual curly-coated kitten was born in a shelter litter. The kitten was adopted by Persian breeder Jeri Newman, who named her Miss DePesto and began a breeding programme. Unlike other Rex breeds, the Selkirk Rex gene is dominant — meaning one curly parent will produce curly kittens. The breed was recognised by the Cat Fanciers Association in 1990.
