About
The Russian Blue is instantly recognisable — a plush blue-grey double coat that shimmers silver in the light, vivid green eyes and a quiet, mysterious demeanour. They are gentle, loyal and reserved with strangers but deeply bonded to their families. Often recommended for allergy sufferers.
History
The Russian Blue is believed to originate from the port city of Archangel (Arkhangelsk) in northern Russia, brought to Britain by sailors in the 1860s. They were initially shown under the name "Archangel Cat". The breed nearly died out in World War II and was revived by crossing with Siamese and British Blues.
Care & Health
The Russian Blue is one of the healthiest pedigree breeds, with a lifespan often exceeding 15 years. Their double coat produces less of the Fel d 1 protein than most breeds, making them more tolerable for some cat allergy sufferers. Bladder stones can be managed through diet.
